Benjamin

Call for Sounds | DEADLINE 10th JUNE 2019

BENJAMIN

Is it possible to break into the commuters’ isolation? how can we invite people to get out of the bubble of their own personal devices so to find themselves as part of a moving - even if temporary - community?

Benjamin is a sound art festival at the tramway stops in Florence, Italy.

For four days, between one service announcement and another, soundart will take over the tramway speakers.

Few years after the Radio On Wheels, Radio Papesse gets back on the streets and wonders whether if is it possible, through sound, to make public transportation a pleasant and unexpected experience to share with others. And at the same time, we wonder if it could be possible to transform the waiting time into an imaginary journey.

The goal is to bring the travelers, the commuters, to a surprising elsewhere, to let them experience even just for brief moments other places: new, far away, real or imaginary...sonic travels to other panoramas than those they can see at the tramway stops.

Raindrops in a tropical forest, a pulsating star, the seagulls in Marseille or the coffee dripping in a pot, the wind whistling before turning into a storm, machines, cicadas, codes…we are looking for sounds that talk about the TRAVEL and the WAIT.

We are looking for soundworks between 30 and 120 seconds long.
Sound installations cannot be accepted.
Pieces containing language and alarm signals cannot be accepted (Why? Benjamin will happen in the public space and we cannot interfere with the accessibility for visually impaired people, nor can we broadcast emergency signals that could cause confusion).

TRAMWAY OVERVIEW

From the city centre, the tramway winds through very populated residential districts and industrial areas, wide avenues and narrow streets. It reaches and crosses Scandicci, it connects the central train station with Peretola airport and Careggi Hospital.
According to the statistics available, on the Florence-Scandicci line alone, there is an average of 25,000 trips a day.
